World Health Organization Announces On-Line Training on Revised International Health Regulations
October 24, 2008 – The Secretariat of the World Health Organization (WHO)has announced a new self-learning course on the revised International Health Regulations (IHRs), available on the Internet at the WHO IHRs Training Site.
Called "Introduction to the International Health Regulations,"
the course is tailored to the needs of the national officers who are supporting the implementation of the IHRs, and to any other interested health professionals.
The learning objectives of the course are the following:
- To explain the main criteria to determine whether or not authorities should notify an event to the WHO Secretariat according to the decision instrument described in Annex 2 of the revised IHRs;
- To understand the main legal procedures under the revised IHRs for notification to the WHO Secretariat of a public-health event of emergency concern;
- To describe specific aspects of IHR communications, including the role of (i) the National IHR Focal Point, (ii) the WHO IHR Contact Point, and (iii) the WHO Country Offices; and
- To describe the timeline for implementing the core capacities required of WHO Member States under Annex 1 of the revised IHRs.
The course is currently available in English, French and Portuguese; by the end of calendar year 2008, it will be available in Spanish and Russian, and Arabic- and Chinese-language versions will be ready by February 2009.
The on-line class has two parts, both of which last about 45 minutes.
