HHS Secretary Welcomes New Director-General of the World Health Organization

March 6, 2007 – Today U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael O. Leavitt welcomed the new Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO, the Honorable Margaret Chan, M.D., of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.  Along with ADM John Agwunobi, M.D., the U.S. Member of the WHO Executive Board, the two discussed pandemic-influenza preparedness and other global health-security issues.  Dr. Chan also briefed Secretary Leavitt and his senior staff on recent personnel appointments and management changes at WHO Headquarters in Geneva.
