Planning for Iraq Mental Health Services

March 24, 2006, Cairo - The history of Iraq during the last decade has led to breakdown in its mental health systems. To help create new programs, the Second Action Planning for Iraq Mental Health, supported by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMSHA) and HHS/Office of Global Health Affairs convened in Cairo, Egypt from March 25-30 to hear from 64 Iraqi mental health experts and 16 U.S. mental health and global health experts, 80 participants in all, on topics such as "Addressing the Needs of Victims of Violence," "Treatment and Medications Management for the Seriously Mentally Ill," "The Needs of Children and Adolescents," and "Developing Community Based Services."

The participants will work together to develop a framework for community mental health and evidence-based practice for Iraq.
