HHS/NIH-Sponsored China AIDS Research ProjectMarch 24, 2006 - The Honorable Clark T. Randt, Jr., U.S. Ambassador to China, attended the initiation of the China Comprehensive International Program of Research on AIDS (CIPRA) project in Yunnan Province, China, on March 17, 2006. A grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services funds CIPRA. This project will determine the incidence and prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases among approximately 2500 miners and 1000 females in prostitution over the course of one year. Those testing positive for diseases will be referred for treatment. The results of this project will assist the local and national China Centers for Disease Control in developing appropriate treatment and prevention plans. The CIPRA grant is given by HHS/NIH and supports HIV treatment and prevention research in developing countries. The China CIPRA is a five-year, $14.8 million grant to the China CDC for projects in HIV epidemiology, behavioral intervention, basic science, clinical treatment, and vaccine development.
