HHS National Toxicology Program Invites Comments on Draft Brief on Bisphenol A April 14, 2008 – Today, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), released its draft Brief on the potential for risks associated with exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical widely used in the manufacture of plastic bottles and food containers. The HHS/NIH/NIEHS NTP invites public comment on the Draft NTP Brief on Bisphenol A, which presents the agency’s scientific review of BPA research. The draft brief is available on the Internet, at the following address: http://cerhr.niehs.nih.gov/chemicals/bisphenol/bisphenol.html. The NTP will receive public comments until May 23, 2008, and will post them on the website. The draft brief will undergo peer review at the next meeting of the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors, scheduled June 11-12, 2008, in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The meeting will be open to the public, and will also be webcast live, at the following internet address: http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/video/live/. After public comment and scientific peer review by the HHS/NIH/NIEHS NTP Board of Scientific Counselors, in late summer 2008 the NTP will release its final conclusions on BPA and the substance's potential effects on human reproduction and the development of children.
