HHS Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration sponsors Mental Health Conference in Kabul, Afghanistan

April 29, 2006 - Charles G. Curie, Administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is leading a delegation of health experts from HHS, the U.S. Department of Defense, and U.S.-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to Kabul, Afghanistan, to take part in an HHS-sponsored Partners' Conference on Behavioral Health. Partners in this effort include the European Commission, the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and NGOs that are already providing mental health care in Afghanistan.

 

Conference participants will include health experts from the government of Afghanistan, donor countries, and institutions and organizations involved with behavioral health, mental health, and substance abuse. Representatives of Afghan medical schools are also invited. The conference provides an opportunity to move forward with the development of an implementation strategy for Afghanistan's Mental Health Action Plan.
