HHS Deputy Secretary Meets with Romanian Deputy Minister of Health

May 4, 2006 - The Honorable Alex M. Azar II, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), met with the Romanian Deputy Minister of Health, Professor Virgil Paunescu, to discuss areas of mutual interest in health care. Deputy Secretary Azar and Deputy Minister Paunescu discussed different strategies to improve the efficiency of hospital systems and manage health-care costs. Deputy Minister Paunescu also outlined Romania's strategy to combat H5N1 strain of avian influenza, and noted his country has not detected any recent cases.

 

Prior to departing Washington, D.C., Deputy Minister Paunescu will visit the HHS National Institutes of Health on May 5. The Deputy Minister and his Delegation will also attend the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Conference on Healthcare Modernization in Central and Eastern Europe, co-sponsored by Johns Hopkins Medicine International.
