HHS/NIH/NIAID Partners with the Luso-American Development Foundation to Host a Research Meeting on Tuberculosis in Africa in October 2007May 4, 2007 - In October 2007, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in partnership with the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) of Lisbon, Portugal, will host a research meeting in Lisbon focused on the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of tuberculosis (TB) in Africa. The call for abstracts is now online at www.flad.pt, and the organizers are strongly encouraging researchers who are working on TB in Lusophone Africa or working on issues related to TB applicable to Africa to submit abstracts and participate in the meeting. One of a series of meetings sponsored by HHS/NIH/NIAID and FLAD over the next two years, the session will bring together American, Brazilian, Portuguese, and Lusophone African researchers to develop collaborative solutions for the way forward in TB research in Africa. The proceedings of round-table discussions held during the meeting will be published and distributed to universities and libraries around the world in the Luso-American Collaborative Solution Book on Tuberculosis. In addition, six Luso-American Collaborative Response Awards on Tuberculosis, in the amount of 10,000 euros each, will be available after the meeting for collaborative start-up research proposals that involve conference speakers and participants.
