HHS National Cancer Institute Launches Internet Site in Spanish

May 23, 2007 – The National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently launched a Spanish-language Internet site.

In the NCI report titled “Annual Report to the Nation,” released last fall, a special section on cancer among U.S. Latino/Hispanic populations was included.  The report found that for 1999 to 2003, Latinos had lower incidence rates than non-Hispanic whites for most cancers, but were less likely to be diagnosed with localized stage disease for cancers of the lung, colon and rectum, prostate, female breast, and cervix.  Latino children, however, have higher incidence rates of leukemia, retinoblastoma, osteosarcoma, and germ-cell tumors than do non-Latino white children.

Given the needs of Latino/Hispanic populations both in the United States and throughout the Americas, the Instituto Nacional del Cáncer Web site will be a valuable resource to Spanish-speaking people, both in our own country and abroad.
