June 4-7, 2006 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through its Office of Global Health Affairs (OGHA) received funds through an Inter-Agency Acquisition Agreement with the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) of the U.S. Department of State to conduct two Food Safety Regulatory Forums, one in Bahrain from June 4-7, 2006, and one in Morocco during the fall of 2006.

 

The Bahrain Forum was a partnership between HHS/OGHA, the HHS Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. Department of State MEPI Program.

 

The Bahrain Forum included 120 food safety leaders from their respective Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Trade and Commerce, and Law Enforcement from 10 countries, including Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The purpose of the forum was to identify key elements of food safety from a public health perspective and to provide training in HHS/FDA regulatory requirements for countries that have entered into or could be negotiating free-trade agreements with the United States.
