U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael O. Leavitt and Panamanian Health Minister Camilo Alleyne Marshall, M.D., sign an agreement to support the Central American Regional Health-Care Training Center, which the two inaugurated at the historic Santo Tomás Hospital in Panamá City, Panamá.

June 4, 2007 - Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael O. Leavitt traveled to Panamá to celebrate the opening of a permanent home for the Regional Health-Care Training Center for Central America.  The site for the Training Center is the former Santo Tomás Hospital in downtown Panamá City.  The location's close connection with medical and educational institutions offers the possibility for clinical training opportunities for the students, who come from the Republics of El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panamá.  While there, Secretary Leavitt met with representatives from the Panamanian business and medical communities, and signed a Joint Statement with the Ministry of Health of Panamá, which reaffirms the United States’ and Panamá’s intent to collaborate in the health sciences in Central America.
