Secretary Thompson Meets with Peruvian Minister of Health

June 28, 2002 - Secretary Tommy Thompson met with Minister Fernando Carbone of Peru in Washington, D.C. Minister Carbone came to Washington with a small delegation from the Ministry of Health to attend the Executive Committee Meeting of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and to meet with HHS about various topics of mutual interest.

Some shared areas of concern between the two countries include: health promotion/disease prevention, particularly with an emphasis on the role of the family; HIV/AIDS prevention, with an emphasis on abstinence; and indigenous health. During their week-long visit, the Peruvian delegation met with HHS representatives from a variety of offices and agencies, including HRSA, CDC, IHS, ACF, and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

During his visit, Minister Carbone visited with officials from the U.S. Agency for International Development. He noted that health, education and nutrition are top priorities for his nation. He shared a copy of "Policy Guidelines for the Health Sector-Period 2002-2012" that delineates his Ministry's mission, vision, and basic principals.

Minister Carbone was very enthusiastic about many HHS programs and initiatives, and referred to the HHS professionals that he and his delegation met with as Secretary Thompson's "Dream Team." HHS will work with PAHO and USAID to explore possible areas for technical cooperation, particularly in the areas of health promotion, indigenous health, and HIV/AIDS.
