HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt Heads Presidential Delegation of the United States for the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro

The official U.S. Delegation to the XV Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the U.S. baseball team at the Athletes' Village.

 

July 19, 2007 – U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael O. Leavitt traveled to Brazil between July 12-15, 2007, as the head of the U.S. Delegation to the XV Pan American Games, held in Rio de Janeiro.

 

Along with the other members of the U.S. Delegation, Hall of Fame pitcher Luis Tiant; George P. Bush, Chief Operating Officer of the N3 Opportunity Fund; and Donna Richardson Joyner, a Member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness, Secretary Leavitt and U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Clifford Sobel attended the opening ceremonies of the XV Pan American Games on July 13, and the next day met with the U.S. baseball and men's gymnastics teams.

 

Also on July 13, Secretary Leavitt and Ambassador Sobel visited the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), the largest Federal biomedical research organization and vaccine producer in Brazil, and met with the Minister of Health of Brazil, the Honorable José Temporão, M.D. The discussions at FIOCRUZ resulted in the identification of priority areas for joint work in health, including the exchange of scientific experts between Brazilian and American institutions, promoting pharmaceutical research and development in Brazil, and collaborations on malaria and HIV/AIDS in Portuguese-speaking Africa.
