President Bush Welcomes Kenyan President to the United States | President Bush welcomes Kenyan President Kibaki to the United States. |
In an official State Arrival ceremony on the morning of October 6, President and Mrs. Bush greeted Kenyan President Mway Kibaki and his wife, along with a large delegation of Kenyan dignitaries and citizens. This is the first state visit by an African leader during the Bush Administration, and it marks President Kibaki's first trip to the United States since being elected last year. During the Bush Administration, the United States and Kenya have worked closely together on many important issues, including terrorism and the international scourge of HIV/AIDS. "Our countries face common challenges," said President Bush, "and we meet them with shared values." President Kibaki commended President Bush's various initiatives for supporting development in Africa, including his development of the Millennium Challenge Account and $15 billion HIV/AIDS Initiative, from which Kenya will be a major beneficiary. "Kenya values the warm and cordial friendship that exists between the two nations," said President Kibaki. For more information:
