Secretary Thompson Meets with the Prime Minister of Mozambique

October 25, 2002 - Secretary Thompson met this week with the Prime Minister from Mozambique, Dr. Pascoal Manuel Mocumbi, to discuss Dr. Mocumbi's candidacy for the Director-General position in the World Health Organization (WHO).

 

Dr. Mocumbi served as Mozambique's Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs before his present capacity as Prime Minister, which he has occupied since 1994. He has also served in a number of other national and international organizations, including the WHO Task Force on Health and Development.

 

Nominations for WHO Director-General are due in November, and the successful candidate will be announced in May 2003 following a vote.
