HHS Deputy Secretary Meets with the Minister of Social Affairs of the Republic of Lebanon

November 8, 2006 - The Honorable Alex M. Azar II, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) met on October 30, 2006, with Her Excellency Nayla Moawad, Minister of Social Affairs of the Republic of Lebanon, to learn of her agenda which promotes the rights of the disabled, the needs of orphaned children, literacy, the rights of female prisoners, child care issues, among others. They also discussed a concept paper developed by the HHS Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), on possible HHS collaborations with Lebanon focused on mental health and resiliency among young people.

 

Minister Moawad has long been active in Lebanese politics, and had served as a member of the National Assembly since 1991. She became Minister of Social Affairs in July 2005. She is the widow of the former Lebanese President René Moawad, who was assassinated on November 22, 1989, shortly after he was elected to that office. A year after his death, in 1990, Minister Moawad founded the René Moawad Foundation in Lebanon, and, in 1993, founded the René Moawad Foundation (RMF-USA) in Washington, D.C., to work for social justice and economic development in Lebanon and the Arab world.
