Global Fund Approves Seventh Round of Grants

November 12, 2007 - Meeting in the city of Kunming, in the People's Republic of China, the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria today approved approved 73 new grants, worth $1.1 billion over two years, to public-private partnerships in 68 countries.

 

As of May 2007, programs that have received financing through the Global Fund have provided antiretroviral treatment for HIV/AIDS to over 1.1 million people, treated 2.8 million people who have tuberculosis, and distributed 30 million insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent malaria.

 

The U.S. Government continues to be the largest contributor to the Global Fund, and has so far committed a cumulative total of $2.5 billion since the creation of the Fund in 2001.

 

Since becoming operational in January 2002, the Global Fund has become the leading financier of programs to fight tuberculosis and malaria, and has committed to provide over 20 percent of international financing against HIV/AIDS. The Fund Board has approved funding of nearly US$10 billion for over 500 programs in 136 countries.
