REDI Center Agreement Signed by U.S., Singapore

REDI Center agreement signing.

November 22, 2005 - HHS Secretary Michael O. Leavitt heralded a new agreement between the United States and Singapore as "an important step in building a global network of surveillance that will help us detect disease outbreaks before they spread."

The Regional Emerging Diseases Intervention (REDI) center will offer an early warning system and research center for infectious diseases in Asia, which is particularly valuable as concern grows about a possible avian influenza pandemic.  The REDI center officially opened in May 2004 to provide early warnings on potential infectious disease outbreaks or bioterrorist threats in the region around Singapore.
