HHS Secretary Addresses U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Import Safety

December 3, 2007 – U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael O. Leavitt delivered remarks to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to outline the recommendations of President Bush’s Interagency Working Group on Import Safety, which the Secretary chairs. "Any country who desires to produce goods for American consumers needs to produce them in accordance with American standards -- American standards of quality, American standards of safety," Secretary Leavitt said.

 

The Secretary will be traveling to Beijing during the week of December 10, 2007, to sign two, binding Memoranda of Agreement with the Chinese Government, one on the safety of food and feed and the other on the safety of drugs and medical devices. He will also be taking part in the third session under the United States-China Strategic Economic Dialogue.
