View Webcast of HHS/World Health Organization Workshop on Immune Correlates of Protection Against Influenza A Viruses, in Support of Pandemic-Vaccine DevelopmentDecember 11, 2007 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research of the HHS Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the HHS National Institutes of Health, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, held a public workshop on scientific aspects of the development of pandemic-influenza vaccine. The workshop included discussions on the following topics: (1) Current knowledge regarding correlates of protection against seasonal influenza; (2) immune responses to human infections of highly pathogenic avian influenza, and to vaccines for novel influenza viruses in humans; (3) assays to evaluate the immunogenicity of influenza vaccines; and (4) the evaluation of the efficacy of human vaccines against highly pathogenic avian influenza. The goals of the public workshop were to (1) Identify the gaps in our knowledge and abilities in addressing the unique challenges encountered in the development and evaluation of vaccines intended to protect against pandemic influenza, and (2) to facilitate the implementation of a global research agenda to improve the assessment of the efficacy of pandemic-influenza vaccines.
