CDC Extends Rule on Embargo of Bird and Bird Products

December 29, 2005 – Effective immediately, in order to prevent possible infection of humans with avian influenza (influenza A H5N1), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued an order banning import of birds from Kazakhstan, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Earlier rules prohibited importation of birds from specified Southeast Asian countries, subject to some limitations. Working in concert with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, HHS/CDC has amended the embargo from time to time dependent on current conditions.
