Australia
Australia is consistently a prominent recipient of grant awards from the NIH. In addition, the CDC works with Australia on a variety of topics including studying and treating infectious disease among indigenous people, tobacco control, HIV clinical trials, and on a community guide targeting the prevention of skin cancer. SAMHSA and the Mental Health Branch of Australia's Department of Health and Aging are members of the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership. Australia and the United States have worked together on several mental health issues, including the elimination of seclusion and restraint; mental health first aid; children's mental health; and indigenous mental health. Australian scientists also participate in NIH's Intramural Visiting Program. This competitive program provides a stipend for two to five years for a foreign researcher to complete his or her post-doctoral training in an NIH laboratory.
Japan
The U.S. and Japan have a long history of collaborating in a number of health, humanitarian assistance and medical research areas. The U.S. and Japan continue to promote health development through the Global Fund
, the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Medical Science Program and the World Health Organization's work on polio eradication in South Asia. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Administration on Aging all regularly host delegations from Japan to discuss non-communicable diseases and improvements in health delivery for older and aging populations. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) cooperate with Japanese research organizations through a number of formal bilateral mechanisms, including the forty-year-old U.S.-Japan Cooperative Medical Science Program (CMSP) which addresses a number of health issues including tuberculosis, leprosy, enteric infections, AIDS, hepatitis, environmental toxicology, malnutrition, parasitic diseases, and viral diseases. NIH hosts many Japanese delegations year round that are interested in exploring potential collaboration. Japanese scientists also participate in NIH's Intramural Visiting Program. This competitive program provides a stipend for two to five years for a foreign researcher to complete his or her post-doctoral training in an NIH laboratory The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) works closely with Japan on trade and multilateral harmonization efforts, such as the International Conference on Harmonization
(ICH) and the Global Harmonization Task Force
(GHTF). Japan was one of the founding members of the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund) and it has been a longstanding partner with the U.S. on a variety of other important international assistance activities such as the reconstruction of Afghanistan and disaster relief efforts.
South Korea
HHS cooperates with South Korea on vaccine-preventable and other infectious diseases, including drug resistant tuberculosis, pandemic influenza, chronic diseases, epidemic investigation and surveillance, public health emergencies, gender and global health, environmental and occupational health, and public health law and quarantine practices. NIH hosts many Korean delegations that are interested in exploring potential collaboration with various Institutes and Centers. South Korean scientists also participate in NIH's Intramural Visiting Program. This competitive program provides a stipend for two to five years for a foreign researcher to complete his or her post-doctoral training in an NIH laboratory
Vietnam
HHS has several assignees in Vietnam, including a Global AIDS Program Director from CDC, a CDC influenza staff member, and a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) employee. CDC is doing work in a variety of areas including HIV/AIDS, influenza, quarantine and migration, tobacco control, and tuberculosis. In addition, Vietnamese scientists receive funding from NIH to do research on tobacco, HIV/AIDS, drug use, mental health, typhoid vaccine, and dengue virus. Vietnamese scientists also participate in NIH's Intramural Visiting Program. This competitive program provides a stipend for two to five years for a foreign researcher to complete his or her post-doctoral training in an NIH laboratory.
